Hi, I am Croix Sather and I am going to start by telling you the raw truth.
In fact, the purpose of this show is to always be real, raw, and honest.

I’m intimidated to create a podcast. I truly am.
And so here I am, in front of the mic again after dozens of mis-starts working desperately to create something that I am proud to share with you.

Now those of you who know me, know that I am not afraid to do take on monumental challenges. I’ve run across America and I broke the world record running solo through Death Valley.

I’ve been a professional inspirational speaker for years so this podcast should be easy for me. But it is not. You’d think that if I could get on stage in front of thousands of people and crush it, this would be easy. But it is not.

Why?
It’s something new.
Something I’ve never done before.
And I know this isn’t as easy as it looks.

The part that I find most difficult is that I am looking a microphone and not an live audience. I cannot see your eyes. I cannot feel your energy and I cannot hear your laughter. It’s just me and microphone.

The voices of self doubt and perfectionism echo through my mind like a Harley Davidson roaring through a tunnel.

But let’s be clear,
Taking action does not mean that you are not also afraid or intimidate or uncomfortable or embarrassed.

But, that is what stops most people from even starting.
Many people let fear manifest as IN-action.

How many times have you not done something because it was intimidating or even down right terrifying.

Fear is normal especially when starting new things.
Your fear simply means you are stepping out of your comfort zone.
Fear means that you are growing.

I have a poster that says, “Every expert was once a beginner.”

Every A-Rod was once a child that picked up the bat for the first time.
Every Beyonce had to step up to the mic in front of an audience for the first time.
Every millionaire started with menial jobs like a stock boy, waiter, or dish washer.

As I was preparing for this, my first ever podcast, I was almost paralyzed with fear. And then it hit me, why not make this episode about overcoming fear. Seems to make sense, right?

Before I became a professional speaker, I was a carpenter.
I knew nothing at all about speaking in front of an audience. And I had never ever spoke in front of a group of people outside of a book report in as a boy in school.

My dad was a preacher and my grandfather was a reverend, so I grew up seeing these men speak in front of small and large audiences. But, I never thought I would be ever be on a stage.

I was carpenter for 15 years and public speaking never crossed my mind. That is until I saw a Tony Robbins, Marshall Syler and a few others on stage at a wealth expo.

I sat in the audience wearing my work jeans, work boots, and tshirt and watch the speakers in awe. My life changed in that moment. I knew that I would be hanging up my toolbelt because that was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

So how do you learn the art, science and the craft of public speaking?

I learned of a Toastmaster speaking club. I sat in my car in the parking lot having a conversation with myself about IF I should go in. A car parked next to me and when he got out, he came over to my window and asked, “Are you here for the Toastmasters meeting? Come on, I will walk in with you.” There was no backing out now.

The first time I got up to speak, my mind sat down. My whole body shook. I was holding on to the lectern so tight that it also shook. I was sweating so bad, you’d think I was running a marathon. And all I did was say, “Hello, My name is Croix. Thank you.”

But I did it. I went to the meeting, and I actually got up to speak. I hated all 4 seconds of it, but it also excited me. I went to every meeting and volunteered for every speaking role. Eventually it got easier and easier. I fear and anxiety was less every time.

Everything changed for me when I was told a story about 2 famous musicians.

“These 2 singers were interviews and asked the same questions. Their response is dramatically different.
The reporter asked, “You’ve been performing for years, what is it like when you go up on stage now.

Barbara Streisand said, “My hands start to sweat, my heart races, my stomach is in knots and I feel like I am going to be sick. All I want to do is run as far away from the stage as I can.”

Bruce Springsteen was asked the same question. He said in his gravely voice, ““My hands start to sweat, my heart races, my stomach is in knots and I feel like I am going to be sick. And that’s when I know … I know that I AM READY.”

Two professionals with the same symptoms, but they have very different meanings to what is happening. One is overwhelmed with fear, the other is in a peak state and ready to perform.

After hearing that story, I started to get excited to get the feeling of butterflies in my stomach. It became on of my favorite feelings and being on stage became one of my favorite places in the world to be. And it still is.

Bruce and Barbara are not the only ones to feel fear before going on stage. Katy Perry, Adele, and Harry Styles are still have stage freight.

The difference is that they feel the fear and take action anyway.

People like to say, “You need to be fearless.”
I am calling bullshit on that one.

It’s not about being fearless.
It’s about being courageous.

It’s about feeling the fear and taking action any way.

Every time you do that, you stretch your comfort zone.
Every time you are courageous and take action any way, you kill some of that fear. Your goal is to turn that fear into excitement. To turn that fear into a state of readiness and peak performance.

Now when I get on stage, I actually have to create some fear, I actually have to work myself up, so that I am just a bit on edge so that I don’t go on stage flat. This way I am always ready and in peak performance.

So then, you might be thinking, “Croix, what’s the big deal about doing a podcast for you?”

It should be super easy for me. But that is not how our mind works.

Your mind will play games on you. Your mind will manufacture fears. FEAR meaning, False evidence appearing real. And you know what the crazy part is. To your body, there is no difference between what is imagined and what is real.

This is why people will panic on JUST the thought of a spider or a snake or any other phobia.

Let me show you exactly what I mean. I need you to play along with me for this part. This is the audience interaction.

Imagine it is a hot summer day. You are at the beach and you haven’t had anything to drink in a while and you are parched. You must get something to drink and quench your thirst.

So you walk up to the boardwalk and you see a sign for fresh lemonade. And you think, “oh, yeah, I want one of those.” As you get close, you see the woman behind the counter wearing a yellow bikini the same color as the lemons … of course. right.

She takes a big lemon and puts it on the butcher block. She takes a big knife and she cuts it in half. As she does that smell of the lemon wafts over to your nose. Your lips even start to pucker. You mouth fills with saliva and the tart taste of the lemon.

She then squeezes the lemon into the mixer and a tiny bit squirts over the counter and hits you in the eye. You rub your eye but it is too late.

Now pause.
When you were listening to that story, what did you feel? What sensations did you get?

If your mind is like most people, you actually smelled the lemon and tasted the tartness of the lemon. How can that be? You are nowhere near a lemonade stand right now.

Did you flinch when the lemon drop landing in your eye? Did it burn too?
How did that happen? There isn’t a lemon anywhere near you.

This is your mind playing games with you.
To your mind and your body there is no difference between something that is imagined and something that is real.

Why is this important?
Because if you vividly imagine something, your mind will believe it has already happened.

If you want to be healthy and fit. Vividly imagine what that looks like. What it feels like. Imagine you living like a healthy and fit person and doing the things that a healthy and fit person does.

Do you want to be focused and driven, vividly imagine what a focused and driven person does, says, and how that person acts. And then start doing those things.

It must be real in your mind to become real in your life.

Before I ran across America, I vividly imagined running across the whole country. I saw the finish line as if I had been there a thousand times. I saw the buildings of NYC. I saw the sun reflecting off the glass. I heard the traffic of the cars as they went by and heard the horns as saw them as the people waved to me. I saw it all. And I mean all of it. And that was BEFORE I took my first step in San Diego.

So back to the matter at hand.
Why was I intimidated to create this podcast? Because in the beginning, I didn’t focus my thoughts on being awesome at this. Instead I let my mind wander and I let my demons roar free (that’s a metaphor, BTW). I let my demons roar free and poison my thoughts with “WHAT IF’s.” What if I am not good at this?
What if you do like my podcast?
What if I put all this work in and I get bad reviews?

But then I remembered.
I remembered Bruce Springsteen, “That’s when I know, I am ready!”

I remembered to vividly imagine me crushing it on the podcast and you listening to it and being inspired.

I remembered that I don’t have to be perfect. But I do have to get started if I am eventually going to be great.

So what is Zen Warrior Podcast going to be about?
Well, to be completely frank and transparent. I don’t know specifically. But I can tell you this.

I believe in inspired action.
I believe that when your heart calls you to do something, you can either ignore it and live with the regret, or you can listen at take action in that direction.

This much I know, 
this podcast will be about transforming your mind so that you can transform your life. It will be a combination of mono-podcasts like this one and also I will be interviewing the people I admire who can bring you a ton of great insight and strategies for success.

I can also tell you that a Zen Warrior is a person looking for the true meaning of success in life. The blend of fulfillment and inner peace. The balance of financial success, personal success, relationship success, and health success. The meaning of life is becoming the best version of who are capable of being.

I’m sure buy now you understand that everything you have and everything you don’t is separated by only one thing. Your mindset. The mindset of a warrior to fight for the things that matter in life. And also the wisdom of inner peace and wisdom of Zen.
